BMW isn’t making small changes to its flagship sedan for 2026. The updated 7 Series and fully electric i7 arrive with a fresher design, more technology inside the cabin and, in the case of the i7, a bigger battery and more driving range.
It is the kind of update that shows how quickly the luxury-car market is changing. Buyers still want comfort and performance, but they also expect their cars to offer the sort of technology they would normally associate with a high-end computer or smartphone.
The updated models were unveiled earlier this year and have started reaching important markets. In India, the refreshed 7 Series and i7 launched on September 11. BMW has also brought some of the technology from its newer Neue Klasse models into the flagship sedan without losing the large, executive feel that has always been part of the 7 Series identity.
A Fresh Face for the 7 Series
At first glance, the changes to the exterior might not seem dramatic. Look a little closer, though, and there is quite a bit that has changed.
BMW has revised the front end with an updated kidney grille, redesigned lighting and new bumpers. The daytime running lights are now slimmer and sit above the main headlight units, giving the car a more distinctive look.
One detail that should stand out after dark is the illuminated grille surround. It gives the front of the car a different character at night and adds to the sense that this is BMW’s flagship.
Around the back, the changes are more subtle. Updated LED lights, a cleaner bumper and new wheel designs round off the exterior makeover.

The Cabin Gets the Biggest Upgrade
This is probably where the new 7 Series and i7 become most interesting.
BMW has introduced its Panoramic iDrive system, giving the dashboard a much more digital appearance. The setup includes a 17.9-inch central touchscreen and a 14.6-inch display for the front passenger.
It is a big step toward BMW’s newer interior design philosophy, where screens, software and connectivity play a much bigger role in the driving experience.
And then there is the feature that has already become something of a talking point: the huge rear Theatre Screen.
For passengers sitting in the back, the 7 Series can feel less like a normal car and more like a private lounge on wheels. For someone buying a flagship sedan, that sort of rear-seat experience can be just as important as horsepower.
More Range for the BMW i7
BMW has also made a meaningful change to the electric i7.
The updated i7 50 xDrive gets a larger 112.4kWh battery, up from the previous 101.7kWh pack. According to BMW’s claimed figures, the car can achieve up to 727km of WLTP range, depending on the specification.
The performance-focused i7 M70 xDrive benefits from the larger battery as well. It produces up to 680hp and has a claimed range of around 686km.
Those numbers are important because range remains one of the biggest concerns for people considering an expensive electric vehicle. Nobody wants to spend a fortune on a luxury EV and constantly worry about where the next charging station is.
Petrol, Hybrid or Electric?
BMW’s approach with the 7 Series is interesting because the company hasn’t completely abandoned conventional powertrains.
The standard 7 Series continues with combustion-engine options, while the i7 provides an all-electric alternative. In some markets, BMW also offers plug-in hybrid versions.
That gives customers more flexibility. Someone who isn’t ready to go fully electric can still choose a petrol or hybrid model, while EV buyers have the i7.
It is a sensible strategy at a time when the transition to electric vehicles is happening at different speeds around the world.
How Much Does It Cost?
In India, prices for the updated range start at roughly Rs 1.95 crore, while the more powerful i7 M70 xDrive sits at around Rs 2.65 crore.
Those figures are obviously market-specific. Prices can change considerably from one country to another because of taxes, import duties, equipment levels and other costs.
Still, these aren’t cars aimed at the average buyer. The 7 Series and i7 sit firmly at the luxury end of the market.
Is the New 7 Series Still a Class Leader?
The 2026 BMW 7 Series and i7 arrive at an interesting time for the luxury-car industry.
BMW is trying to keep the traditional strengths of the 7 Series — comfort, performance and prestige — while adding more technology and electrification. The i7 takes that idea even further with its larger battery and impressive claimed range.
The competition won’t make things easy. Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and several emerging luxury EV manufacturers are all pushing hard with increasingly sophisticated cars.
For BMW, however, the message is pretty clear. The future of luxury motoring isn’t necessarily about choosing between old-school performance and new technology.
It is about bringing performance, comfort, technology and different powertrain choices together in one flagship car.
And judging by what BMW has done with the latest 7 Series and i7, the company isn’t ready to give up its place at the top of the luxury-sedan conversation just yet.
